Bollywood and Hollywood: The Perfect Mix
The Bollywood film industry has been one of the most dominant film industry’s of the world but over the past few years this dominance has grown rapidly and with the acceptance of Bollywood into Hollywood it seems as if the time is approaching for the all singing, all dancing culture of Indian cinema to finally be accepted by the masses of the US.
It is often actors who are viewed as pioneers and as their status rises, so too does the status of their Industry. Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai began the attempt with a few small roles however it was not until recently that Hollywood really started to notice just what it is that the Indian film Industry had to offer.

We are in fact talking about ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ , Danny Boyle’s breathtaking hit that not only stole the hearts of people across the nation but the hearts of the ever hard to please Oscar committee as it thoroughly dominated the 2009 award ceremony taking away an astonishing eight awards.
Since ‘Slumdog’ worked its magic, people began to adapt and accept the filmic style of Bollywood and although it wasn’t a thoroughly typical Bollywood movie, it still contained the amazing story telling style that can have a deep affect on us all; an affect that has even hit the major film corporations as Karan Johar’s 2010 film ‘My name is Khan’ became the first ever Bollywood film to be involved in a worldwide distribution deal with FOX, the first ever deal of its kind between the two industries.
The movie itself sees two of the biggest stars in an incredible story that targets the current atmosphere in today’s society, again like ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Johar’s ‘My name is Khan’ has moved away from the stereotypical Bollywood style but still contains the ever important elements that make a Bollywood film so Bollywood.
Stories can be quiet powerful but it is often the actors that are viewed as the pioneers of their Industry and although Aishwarya Rai began the modern day trend of Bollywood into Hollywood it is now legendary Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor who is definitely becoming a pioneer, as following his successful role in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ he is now on television screens across the nation in the new season of smash hit US show ‘24’, an incredible step that is no doubt going to make the masses become aware of Indian cinema.
The musical style of Bollywood also got noticed when A.R. Rahman scooped the Oscar for his song ‘Jai Ho’ produced for one of the most successful movies of 2009 ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ who then went one further by joining forces with one of the biggest US girl bands ‘The Pussycat Dolls’ to produce an English mix of the song.
The song again pushed the Bollywood industry forward in more ways than one as not only did the band stay true to the Indian lyrics but also took on Bollywood fashion and made it appealing to their legions of fans.
A.R Rahman again helped to get the Bollywood industry noticed a little bit more when he joined forces with pop sensation Kylie Minogue for the song ‘Chiggy Wiggy’ from Bollywood hit ‘Blue’, breaking boundaries and increasing the acceptance of the Bollywood Industry. With the rise in popularity of Indian stars and Indian movies, it now seems that all the elements of Bollywood are getting increasingly noticed by everyone across the globe.
Bollywood fashion has always been an element of the industry that a large majority of people have noticed as an increasing number of women, including the a-list celebrities, have begun incorporating specific elements of Bollywood fashion into their own style. The brightly coloured saris, the bold and dramatic jewellery and the extravagant make-up styles have increased in popularity amongst women across the globe.
Wherever we look, it now seems clear that since the success of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ the power of Bollywood has rapidly increased and what at first seemed unusually strange is now becoming increasingly accepted by all those across all areas of the globe.
Hollywood now seems to be taking advantage of all elements of Bollywood and be it music, fashion or the actors; it seems that a mix is just what everybody is after.
