The Art of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of plant oils known as essential oils for the purpose of altering a person’s mood, state of mind and promoting health. It is a complementary therapy designed to treat the mind and body. Its effectiveness is yet to be scientifically proven but it is however a commonly held belief that essential oils may have some therapeutic function.

Aromatherapy is said to work by tiny molecules being absorbed via the skin, entering through the lungs and into the blood stream. The soothing combination of massage, wonderful aromas and baths are supposed to help regulate and balance the mind and body. Regular at home use of aromatherapy can help to stimulate the immune system and make it stronger.

There are three main ways that aromatherapy can be applied:

Topical applications: massage, skin care, baths and compresses.

Aerial diffusion: environmental fragrancing or disinfection.

Direct inhalation: aims at psychological well being, decongestion and respiratory problems.

The theory behind aromatherapy is explained by two arguments. It is believed that aromatherapy has a direct effect on the brain, in particular the limbic system. The second argument is that the pharmacological effects of essential oils have a direct effect on the mind and body.

Whether aromatherapy is clinically proven or not, most people would vouch for the fact that a relaxing massage and a hot bath are certainly beneficial for them. So why not treat yourself this weekend to a luxurious and relaxing massage, or invest in some bath oil and candles and soak away the stress of the long week.
