Born and bred in Bolton, there is one young boxing sensation that has truly captured the heart of the nation with his spirit, drive and passion. As the nation has watched him grow, the skill he has shown inside the ring has taken him from a boy with a dream to a man who has made his dreams a reality.
Don’t Delay Features Editor, Katy Meaney, met the young boxing star as he prepared to chase his dream across the pond with his American Debut.
Amir Khan first stepped into the ring at the tender age of eight. He was fighting competitively at 11 and by the time he was 17 he was already a teenage boxing sensation.
A born fighter he scooped silver at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. As the only British boxing representative there he certainly did his country proud.
At just 23, he has taken the world of British boxing forward, inspiring a new generation of potential boxing legends.
Talking at the press conference for his long awaited American debut, at the famous Madison Square Gardens, Amir spoke of the fight that is set to fulfilling his childhood aspiration of appearing in what he called ‘the Mecca of boxing’.
“Muhammad Ali fought there and I said I want to fight there one day, I wish my picture would be up there and one day people would say Amir Khan fought there. This is the time.”
Confident but never disrespectful, Amir said: “I respect Paulie, I think he’s had some great fights in the past, but there is only going to be one winner and I am going to keep this title, its mine.”
His mild and modest manner only created a greater contrast to Paulie Malignaggi’s bold style and commenting on the trash talk put forward by Paulie in the build up to the fight, Amir simply replied: "If he wants to trash talk he can trash talk, if he wants to make faces he can make faces, at the end of the day come May 15th my fists will do the talking”
Away from the world of boxing Amir is just like any other normal guy. When asked about the real him he simply said “I am the way I am I don’t have to put anything on to make myself different. The way you see me that’s the way I am, I am a normal chilled out guy, a humble guy, a down to earth guy.”
Amir is a refreshing change to the egos often adopted by other sporting stars whose private life actions have damaged the image of British sporting idols.
Other ambassadors of British sport have been disgraced following allegations of adultery and sex scandals splashed across the front pages of the tabloids. When asked his views on the antics of footballers and the kiss and tell scandals of recent months, Amir simply said “I know there’s been a lot of bad stuff going on in the press but I’m a family guy and I would never ever disrespect my family and do anything like that. It’s hard seeing what the footballers got up to, but I’m a different guy to them. I’ve been brought up differently.”
