Priscilla Uppals Successful Tragedies

If you fancy a book that's fun, interesting and modern then look no further. Priscilla Uppals Successful Tragedies is a wonderful example of modern poetry at its best. She is a breath of fresh air in the world of poetry since gaining an international reputation 12 years ago after publishing her first collection. This success comes down to her provocative, surreal and imaginative writing mixed with characters that are unforgettable and imagery that will take your breath away. Uppals poems are thought provoking, witty and incredibly insightful. At times you can not help but be moved. Uppal succeeds in being incredibly funny whilst remaining controversial and deeply serious, often using humour to get to the heart of an issue. Intertwining the horrors of the past with the tragedies of the present and presenting the politics of our age in a way completely unlike any other. She is a poetical poet who most definitely ruffled some feathers. Uppal takes us on a modern fairy tale of morality that allows the reader to learn more about themselves and the world around them than we would believe possible. She is a messenger of truth in the most unsuspecting form.

Successful Tragedies includes works from six of her books, including her latest collection Traumatology and Ontological Necessities which was short listed for the 2007 Griffin Book prize. Successful Tragedies follows Uppal on an adventure that sees her issue warnings to gynaecologists, meditate over spilt milk with Freud, have sex with Christopher Columbus, discuss dying and much much more. Upon reading Uppals work for the first time readers will uncover a world of terrifying reality as she strives to uncover the motivations behind our passions and cruelties. Uppals poetry embraces crudity, humour and our reality in a way that results in a wholly surreal experience as we are thrown through time on a wild and turbulent adventure.

Uppal opens Successful Tragedies in a way that throws the reader in at the deep end, her poetry like most Post Modern works is up for interpretation yet unlike her Post Modern counter parts Uppal intends her work to have depth and meaning as she strives to uncover the answer to all of lifes questions. A sense of darkness and the profound is evident through out Uppals poetry. Each work has its own message and strength that forces the reader to partake in her inner most reflections. Uppal is a voice for those who suffer but can not speak out.

Successful Tragedies is Uppal at her best. It serves as a wonderful example of Uppals controversial post modernist approach to poetry that results in a dark and exhilarating experience for the reader and one I would definitely recommend.
